My wife is awesome. Last night we played Battletech. I can't think of another woman that I have ever met that would play Battletech, let alone enjoy it. We had a lot of fun but the game went a bit longer then I think she expected. This was our first game using the complete rules, prior we had used introductory rules that only taught the turn order, the basics of movement, and attacks. Also our previous games had been single 'mech engagements but this game was a lance on lance (4 'mechs each, totaling 185 tons per side). We didn't start until about 11 o'clock and finished at about 2 in the morning. Which for a game of Battletech is pretty reasonable, at least in my opinion.
However the game took a turn for the worse at around 1:50 AM when I moved my panther (a 35 ton scout type 'mech with a Particle Projector Cannon) directly behind her dragon (a 60 ton medium general duty type 'mech) and hit her, with the previously mentioned PPC, and luckily rolled her right torso which didn't have enough armor from the rear to stop a PPC shot from penetrating and possibly causing a critical hit. I rolled a critical on the crit table, then proceeded to roll her autocannon ammo slot in her right torso for the location of the critical causing 90+ damage and destroying her best 'mech in one single shot. Amazingly she took it pretty well. Although neither of us had much heart left in the game after that turn of events.
But in my opinion it was reasonable payback for the first game we played when on the very first turn we both ran towards the center of the map, she shot her AutoCannon 20 at me from long range rolled a 12 to hit (on 2d6; which was what she needed to even hit) then a 12 on location (head) completely decapitating my 'mech and ending the game in under 60 seconds!
